Rare snuffbox out of glass with imitation of agate. First part of 19th century
Rare snuffbottle out of glass with imitation of agate. Glass is striated with combinations of different brown ones to appear as agate and in overlay for the decoration. Snuffbottles out of glass imitating  other materials are a proof of the exceptional talent of the glassmakers, they were  as well imitated seemingly and in weight selected materials. In spite of the feeling as a less noble matter, the imitation out of glass had with the eyes of the Chinese an equal value as it was the way of showing their skill. This snuffbottle is with decoration cut in relief on a face of a falcon perched on a rock and on the other face a bear. The falcon, bird of good omen is emblem of temerity, it is a sign d' authority. The Chinese associate the falcon (ying) with the bear (xiong) symbol of force and audacity. Thus ying represents the heroic and xiong the virile one. Each shoulder of the snuffbox is decorated with factitious ring suspended with a medallion. The stopper quite as interesting because is made out of glass with l' imitation of the coral representing a coiled dragon. China time 19th century
