Chinese Snuffbox out of glass known as " overlay" Circa 1780.
Snuffbox out of glass known as " overlay" Circa 1780. The bottle is out of transparent glass with inclusions innumerable small bubbles known as " flakes or storm of snow". It was worked to leave as glass block the made-to-order of the rock crystal. This material was very appreciated in China till the end of the 19 th century because it was rare and had the value of the semi-precious stones. Concerning its yellow color, it corresponds to a code of the colors in force in China til the end of the 18 th century, at which time belongs this bottle snuffbox. If the color " Yellow opaque" was strictly reserved for the imperial family, this color will be used by part as on this bottle by Mandarins and the Dignitaries. These small bottles became witnesses of the Chinese art with its procession of traditions and legends. They had value of gift or currency exchange. The bottle presented here had the values of wishes of success for a Dignitary. On a face the mushroom for it is reproduced; intelligence and longevity; the bat for happiness; the sun which rises for prosperity and the social rise; finally the goose which flies for long life. On the other face appears carp for perseverance, the knowledge and also the higher mention at the time of examinations. Here even this carp survives on waves to climb in the imperial hierarchy and binds to a temple in sign of good omen. This very interesting snuffbox is especially remarkable by the work of polishing of under layer which in made an object of desire.
